Hello everyone

Bought me a et48.3 roller this morning (no pics yet, being shipped) and was curious on what you guys think about motors. I currently have a choice of 2 different motors, a Castle 1515 2200kv and a Leopard 4092 1480kv. I am leaning towards the Leopard, but know that the Castle can push my Kraton up to 65 mph with a 17T pinion. For the esc I also have a choice of 2, a Mamba Monster X and a Hobbywing Max6. What would you choose and why would you choose it? I know a lot of Tekno guys like Tekin or TP, but being I have a extra motor and esc I'd rather not buy something quite yet.

My driving style currently is basher, but I would like to get into running the track. if nothing else just run at the track for fun.

Thanks

edit...Both motors are sensorless

not related to the motor question, but the et48.3 I have has a M2C chassis. Would stock be better for me as I am not racing?

sensorless makes sense (pun intended) for bashing around, no need to pay more for for a feature that can cause problems down the road... not uncommon to damage a sensor board in a hard crash, etc...

Doesn't really matter what brand of motor you select, they are all gonna perform comparable provided you select a similar can size and KV.

For 4S I would go with something in the 1900KV to 2600KV max.

For 6S, you'll want a motor around 1400KV to 1600KV max.

I currently run a Gool RC 4074-1900kV on 4S and this motor has been doing great for the past 1.5 years I've been racing with it.

I also run a HobbyWing 150A ESC.

I have ran about a dozen different brands of ESC's in the past, but have settled on HobbyWing as my personal favorite. They offer a deep discount RMA for any damaged ESC's outside of warranty and HobbyWing ESC's tend to last the longest of any brand of ESC that I've owned.

I used to hate on Castle, in fact I used to call them "Castle Cremations" because they notoriously had weak BEC's and would experience brown outs with Savox servos, another brand I grew to dislike for different reasons. Anyway, Castle has since improved the BEC's in their latest generation ESC's so long as you select a current design then chances are you'll do okay.

Note that if you come across a sensored motor that is a good price (i.e. GoolRC), you can still run it with a sensorless ESC as the sensored wire is optional.

I also just picked up a used et48.3 probably not going to get it put together till mid summer, I tossed the leopard 4092 1480kv in it checking for fitment, it looks like the esc mount will need some trimming to allow the motor to sit level, right now with a 14t pinion as the motor slides down in the mount too reach gear mesh the esc mount is pushing the rear of the motor upward, also with it being a longer can you will be needing another spot too mount the esc, or at least I will as I will be running a max6 in mine.

I run the leopard 1480kv motor in my kraton on 4s too 6s and have been very happy with it, but I am not sure yet if I want too run it in my et48.3 or look for something with more torque... just started looking at the tp motors just need to find out how hot they run.

Have the Hobbywing 4274 motore and esc package in my et48.3. It is a monster on 4s. On 6s it is insane, way to much power. How about non-stop wheelies as far as you want to carry them. Standing backflips etc. Going to only run 4s as it is more then enough power. Ordered two more motor/esc combo kits. One for the MT and one for the daughters mt she is building. The system runs on the cooler side. With the Hobbywing program box one can read the max temps of the motor and esc after each run. Also if the motor gets to hot the esc shuts it down. Very nice feature. It is a sensor system. Great unit at a great price point and waterproof.

Those are two very different choices. The Castle 1515/MMX will fit in the stock location while the Leopard 4092 will require you to relocate the ESC. The Max6 has a huge foot print and there's only one place for it, above the motor on a custom tray. If you like overkill power and cooler temps than the Leopard 4092/Max6 is a great choice, but not ideal for track use. The M2C chassis would actually be better for bashing because you can use 2 rear chassis braces with it. It has a hole for the stock brace and an additional hole for the NT48.3 brace. I would recommend the M2C aluminum brace.

This is a custom ESC tray that Michael Meyer made for me. The holes mount into the Max6.

Thanks for all the input. I will probably toss the the Leopard with the Max6 in it and run 4s for now. The et48 will be arriving with some sort of custom esc mount with it, though not nearly as nice as the one @Overkill has. I have Michael Meyer on Facebook, I'll be hitting him up for one of those for sure. I have ordered 2mm hub extensions so I can run MT tires. Also been looking for that hardened spur but cant find one in stock. I found the whole diff that has it included, hopefully I wont need that any time soon. Needless to say I am extremely excited, the only part I will miss out on is the thrill of build it from a kit. For me, tinkering on these things gives me almost the same satisfaction as running them does.

I know the guy I got it from mentioned it has a rear brace, aluminum rear hub carriers, new avid bearings, and a carbon fiber center diff brace. Hopefully the extra NT brace is what he meant.

I just recently put one together, I went with a castle 1515 monster x combo. So far its plenty, only ran 4s. I'm just a basher as well.

Here is my configuration:
I have the custom plate, max6 and i'll receive next week my new motor, a leopard 4092 1300kv. I hope it won't run too hot

How long did it take to get the plate?, I was checking out his f/b pg but did not see the plate, so assuming its a custom order deal?

A little improvement on that custom plate would be to move the ESC up, covering the screws and where the ESC is now have a cutout that would allow you to mount a fan over the motor. Two birds, one stone. :)

Wow. Very nice craftsmanship. Are those outside edges rounded and not chamfered??? All of the inside edges have been nicely chamfered and the whole thing polished. What other parts does he make?
Sure is. I would have to look at it more closely. All of the braces and stuff have already been made by M2C and there's really not much else needed for Teknos. He makes a lot of parts for Arrmas though. His friend that owns POS makes a carbon fiber center to rear chassis brace/plate for the ET.

Also been looking for that hardened spur but cant find one in stock.

My et48.3 has arrived! I am overwhelmed and want to dive in but don't know where to begin lol. Think I'll let the nerves settle before I get on it. Going to need to solve the ESC thing for sure.

The homemade ESC mount it come with, works but not ideal.

I like that plate, only concern would be the heat like you mentioned. What about heatsink with fan, would a YeahRacing fan fit on the motor somehow?

That esc mount looks like something Chainsaw or I would do... as for where to start, tear it down one section at a time and go thru it...I just got my et48.3 the other day I am currently tearing it down and cleaning the bearings and looking for worn damaged parts, your et48 looks to be in a little better condition than mine, next I will drain the fluids out of the diffs and change with fluids I normally use for Monster / basher Truggies but I am in the same boat as you and will need to purchase the steel c.d spur gear, Good Luck and look forward to your build as it sounds like it will be pretty close too my build :)

Almost rethinking and may take the Mamba M X out of the Kraton and use it instead of the Max6. Then I'll be able to but it on the other side of the motor (sideways) and relocate the receiver box somewhere. I like that custom mount that sits the esc over the motor, but I live in Texas and it gets HOT here. Heck I say gets but it is already hot here in May. Good luck to you as well, this morning I was thinking I'll be running this thing by the weekend, now I see thats not going to happen lol.

It took a bit more than a week. I think he is just building one when you ask him

Well my motor overheat but it's also because it's 2000kv. For the moment i can't fit a fan but maybe i could with a longer motor by putting it in the back. Or maybe by cutting a bit of the plastic side. I don't know, i hope i won't be needing a fan with my 1300kv a 16T pinion

You can use the Yeah Racing heat sink but you have to space the plate up higher. This is my buggy I’m currently working on.

What spacer didi you used? How higher is it now?

I had to use a 25mm spacer in order to clear the Graphene battery. Which is larger than most batteries, not just in height but the width.
