Very tight (aluminum) shock preload collars

Anyone experience this? I'm running the nice, blue, Tekno, aluminum ones. O-ring is in place and lubed with grease. They were very hard to initially thread on and the shocks had to be held with the shock clamp tool. Now, when adjusting preload/ride height the shock caps spin open rather than the preload collars moving. Looks like I'll have to completely removed the shocks and springs to grip the shock body and adjust preload. It's OK to do this once but super time consuming to actually dial in ride height.

Any solutions? Thanks.
 
I have the same - have to remove shocks every time I want to adjust preload. Very annoying!
 
Seems very easy to resolve by Tekno... Just a hair larger groove diameter for the o-ring would do it. Seems like our parts are very likely out of dimension/tolerance.

You can cut 1-2mm from the length of the o-ring. I lubed mine and they've kind of worn in to the point where I can adjust them while they're on the car.

Thanks! Do you mean to fully sever the ring and remove a length of it's circumference? I assume the collars still maintain their adjustment?

Haven’t tried it myself, but yeah that’s the idea. They just wore in a bit overtime for me and are now easily adjustable.
 
I was told to trim a 1-2mm off, cut in half take 1-2 mm off and reinstall, this was from a team driver. I have not done this as of yet but i'm going to try it on one to see if it works
 
I started using the Associated collars as the Tekno ones drove me nuts. Mugen collars work as well just more $.

Not thrilled with the advise from Tekno directly,

"Did you use oil on the O-ring and threads on the body? Some are tighter than others, but with some oil and working it up and down the threads of the body they will loosen up."

on my last build I just put the o-ring on top side of the collar and I have had no issues with them backing off

very EZ to adjust as well
 
Old thread but I thought I’d post this in case it helps someone. I had the same issue, but used a thin 17mm wrench to hold the shock in place and used a pair of pliers to dislodge the collar (using a piece of rubber to not mar the collar). The thin wrench makes it possible to easily access the “nut” on the bottom of the shock body with the spring on. Once the collar moves, it is much easier to turn by hand and the wrench helps hold the shock in place to avoid putting pressure on the structure while turning the collar.

I thread the the collar, with o-ring inserted, upside down first just past the threads and then remove and thread the collar, with o-ring inserted, the right way on. Jared Tebo had a post about this on his social media account.

I also like to use 10k diff oil the bottom part of the threads when threading upside down and the correct way. Add some more drops as needed as you thread up the collar then wipe and clean.

This makes the collars super smooth and easy to adjust by hand when tuning.
