Improve steering

I ran my MT410 today for the first time. Very fun but the steering is terrible. First thing I did was set the limits to 150% and made sure it didn't bind. It helped some but still not great. I have a D950TW servo, which should have enough torque. I can bump the BEC from 6.0 to 7.4 which could also slightly help but is there anything I can do to dramatically improve steering?

I briefly owned an XMaxx and was similarly disappointed with the steering. I put one these on it, which made it much better. I'm wondering if I need something faster/stronger than the D950TW?

Sounds like you need to check your servo saver, it could be set too loose. Another possibility is that you have D/R limiting your steering. That should be set at 100% when you set your endpoints.

The servo you have is fine for speed and torque.

I run all my BEC’s at 7.4 just to get the best performance out of the servo.

look over the steering steps and see if you may have missed something or have something out of adjustment
 
Just curious, what radio do you run? Does it have a gyro? Switch it off to make sure it is not doing any corrections.

Also, what servo horn do you use? Post a pic.
 
Thank you for your replies. I found a few things which helped. I'd say its much better but I'd still like for it to be even better. I checked the wheel nuts and tightened them good. I did follow the servo saver directions originally as far as tighten tight as you can and then back off 3 turns BUT... since I have a metal gear servo, I tightened it up quite a bit. I had reused a receiver from another model. It had AVC active, so I turned off AVC. I also set the limits back to 100%. I can turn the wheels left/right and there's a small bit of servo groan at the end but not loud buzzing, so the end points are about where they should be.

One part I find very odd (and I don't think I've had this trouble on ANY car/truck that I've ever owned) is the steering doesn't return to center on its own. What I mean is that if I'm cruising around the yard and stop, it will likely be off center. If I turn the wheel left or right when stopped, then it will stop in the center, but if I'm driving in anything other than a straight line, the truck won't stop with the wheels centered. BTW. I did check for "slop" in the steering. There is some, I'd guess between 1/8 and 1/4" which seems excessive to me? For a kit off this quality I'd expect almost no slop?

I also have a Castle Connect on order and plan to increase the BEC from 5.5 (default I think) to 8.0V as I verified both the D950TW and SR4210 can handle up to 8.4V.

I'm using the metal TKR5253B servo arm and not the plastic one with the kit. I can get a pic posted tomorrow. It's roughly parallel with the nub from the steering rack, per the assembly directions.

If I have AVC disabled, does the AVC calibration matter at all? I'm guessing not since AVC is disabled? This was a bit of a long shot but thought it might be worth a try.

It's an issue when running at speed. I can only really run at maybe 1/3 speed in my back yard. Any other 1/10 or 1/8 model would normally be pretty easy to roll due to tuning too tight "yanking the wheel" (even on X-MAXX) but I can't get this truck to do it, which makes me think something is still off with the steering.
