Here are some photos of my newest body project: Proline Baja Bug . The first 3 are without decals. The last 3 are with decals. Candy Apple Yellow with Silver Backer.

That looks really nice. What brand paints did you use and how did you apply them?

I experimented with the Spaz Stix brand this time. I used the Candy Yellow (#15259) with the Silver Metallic Color or Candy Backer (#00309).

Here's what I liked:
  1. It came in a little larger can - 3.5 fl oz. compared to 3.0 fl oz for Tamiya (my previous go-to paint). I always had to buy 2 cans of Tamiya but only needed about 1.25 in reality. I had a second can of Spaz Stix (just in case) that I elected not to use but I could have touched up the top a little to remove some light spots (my fault). But rather than use a partial can, I just went ahead and applied the silver backer paint.
  2. I had NO spattering at all. The spray was uniform and 3 light coats were applied with no issues. I will be a Spaz Stix user until I run across something better.
Helpful tip for next time:

I washed the body thoroughly, then trimmed it, and then painted it. Next time I will trim it first, then wash it, and then paint it. I noticed 2 or 3 spots where my fingerprints affected how the paint stuck to the body. Again, my fault, not the fault of the paint.

I have been thinking of trying Spax Stix for awhile and, like you, was always using Tamiya and like you, find that one can of Tamiya isn't usually enough. I just don't care for how expensive the paints are for how little you get for either brand.

Did you do any surface prep of any kind? I have always used sandpaper or a scotch pad to scuff up the surface before painting.

No, I did not do any surface prep. What are the advantages of scuffing the surface like that?

I've been trying SpazStix here and there over the last couple months with mixed results. Some of them seem to go on really good, namely their "solid" colors. They offer several different color changing paints and a mirror chrome also. Those ones you reall need to he carefully because they seem to be really easy to screw up if you get it on even a little too thick or if your body isnt really clean. Out of 5 bodies I've done with them, (4 color changing, 1 chrome) I've only had 2 come out to my somewhat picky liking. I've probably painted over 100 bodies in the last 20 years, and probably 85 have been with Tamiya cans. They are fairly expensive, but I still think they are the best overall. The 2 color changing bodies that came out good get tons of compliments, but I also have 3 bodies that I dont even want to use unless I were to go bashing. I did my Raptor body for my ET48.3 with SpazStix Candy Blue with Candy Apple Green stripes, and the blue turned out great but the green was once again blotchy in places. Maybe I've ended up with some old cans or something. The beetle looks great though! My buddy has one that I need to paint soon. It's going on his Aarma Kraton so I have to cut the rear motor section off to get it to fit...
