Hi everyone, I've been gathering information for my new build.

My goal is to order everything and build a fast basher. Speed is as important to me as a strong, premium build.

I have the following questions, followed by the links and recommended parts from various users which I've gathered.

I'd appreciate any feedback.
  1. The Max8s appear to be the most popular ESC. Does this handle 4s or 6s? or both?
  2. A variety of servos work but you must get the aluminum servo horn, correct?
  3. I didn't see anything specific re 6s batteries. I'd like this thing to fly so does a 6s battery fit in this to start? 2 x 3s? or start with 4s?
  4. I've had an number of pinions recommended. As long as the internal diameter fits the motor shaft (obviously), then does the mounting setup allow you to adjust so your pinion meshes correctly with the remaining stock gearing?
  5. Which pinion is going to give me the most power, without destroying something?
  6. Are any extra tools required for assembly? I have all the usual, excluding shock pliers (buying) and an impact drill (I have an electric driver). Otherwise I am set.
  7. I didn't see much re receivers. I have a basic Flysky FS-GT5 with no gyro. Is this okay https://www.amazon.com/Flysky-FS-GT5-Transmitter-FS-BS6-Receiver/dp/B07B2SVQ3M
  8. Is there anything else I must order now so that I don't sit here twiddling my thumbs waiting for parts?
Thank you so much!

Welcome! I look forward to seeing the build, don’t shy away from posting pictures ?

I’ll take as shot at answering questions:
1) The max 8 is capable of both 4 and 6s
2) Correct, just get a horn with the matching spline count to the servo that you choose.
3) The truck is 6s capable and will definitely fly on 6s. Its a bit unruly but it definitely moves.
4) Yep, the motor mount slides to allow a variety of pinions and spurs to properly mesh.
5) The best pinion depends on a lot but usually revolves around the largest that you can run without overheating the motor. Driving style, ambient temperature, terrain, tire size, and more all play a factor. I would definitely recommend mounting a fan and heatsink on your motor. I am happy with my yeah racing dual fans but definitely get some aluminum framed fans.
6) A small set of metric allens is all that should be needed. 1.5, 2, 2.5, and maybe 3.0
7) I don’t have any experience with flysky so I’ll have to pass on this answer.
8) Have you picked out tires and a body yet? I can’t think of anything else that you will need. Do you have soldering skills and all of the battery and motor connectors that you’ll need?

1. Thanks.
2. Thanks, got the ideal one, with 25 spline count (in below parts list)
3. Thanks, it's going to be handful.
4. Thanks, makes sense.
5. I will get fans and have since done some pinion research. I don't want to go too big.
6. I have those tools, thanks.
7. Ok.
8. I have in the below google doc. Tyres and body.
9. Soldering skills? No. Soldering equipment. Yes! What connectors will I need?

Haha I started the same way, tools are quick to acquire but the skills take some practice.
Usually all that you’ll need to solder is battery connectors and motor connectors. Sometimes if you pick your combos carefully you can order the ESC with the proper connectors installed from the factory. What battery connectors are you going with?

Yea. Only some videos and old habits to guide me. .. recipe for chaos.
so far for connectors all I have are adaptors. So that’s fluid...

I’m finalizing the ESC motor combo...

Stick with the better xt90 or EC5. Better safe than sorry.
