So I broke the rear part of the rear diff case.

Right around one of the top screws that attach it to the front part. Yes, I'm as confused as you as to how.

Too late, the wife empltied the trash. Was a crack through the plastic just below one of the top screws.

The only time I've broken a rear gearbox is when I wasn't using this brace.
