It’s 9 deg outside and everything is covered in ice and snow. But I found a parking lot that is clear. So at lunch it should be above 10 deg F.
I am going to just make a couple passes and some circles to run my car.
I went over all the set up stuff last night.
Calibrated the ESC to my transmitter
Ran a motor test to get the full throttle sensor position.
I am amazed at seeing 72000 motor rpm on a 2s battery. Now I just want to scuff the tires without flipping over or hitting a pole.

That was fun. Cold, but fun.
I went out to a parking lot and made a couple passes. Just around the lot and set the steering. Then back and forth full throttle passes. Then full throttle with full brakes. Then circles both clockwise and counterclockwise until my fingers went numb.
I did not flip over. I did spin out a couple times.
I did not hit any poles or curbs. But did notice a touch of understeer with power on. That could be the slippery new tires, cold ground or both. Over all it seems very fast but very controlled. I really need a dirt lot. But they are all covered in ice at the minute.

The weather in Iowa has been absolutely terrible for RC cars. So I am just hanging in the shop looking for things to do. I noticed the front tire will spray dirt directly on the ESC and steering servo. To help prevent this I mounted some front mud guards. There are actually the rear “wing” fairings that come with the Proline flow tech body. They only required drilling a single mounting hole. They screw directly into the front of the chassis and should prevent dirt from covering the inside of the chassis.
I have no idea if they are a good idea or not. They can be removed in seconds if they are a problem.

Slight change of plans
I had planned to use a Tekin RX8 gen3 ESC. I have a Mamba x in it now but the weight limit of the Mamba x is a little low. And since I need the Mamba x for my rock crawler I went on line to purchase the RX8. I could not find one without buying a motor . I have a pro4 4500 motor and done want another lower KV motor and can’t find a combo with the motor I want. I did not want to spend 300 plus for a combo that includes a motor I can’t use. On top of that I would need a Hotwire 3.0 for another 60 bucks.
So I decided to buy a Castle Monster x. I can’t see any reason this ESC should not work. I will keep my eyes open for an RX8 but at least for now I’ll use the Mknster X.
Come on spring!!

The monster X is an awesome Speed control. It comes with massive 6.5 mm bullet conectors. Pre tinned three color wire. And it comes with the sensor cable included.
The data logging is fantastic and I have a blue tooth adapter that allow me to program from my phone.
If that was not enough it spun the motor to almost 70,000 RPM! That’s freewheeling the drive train and ballooning the tires. But about 10,000 RPM more than I got with the Mamba X I use in my rock crawler. It is also very smooth. I drove around my shop at a very slow speed. It is super controllable and drifts and brakes really nice. I even saved about a hundred bucks over the Tekin RX8 because I have the Programming cables.

Well that did not go to plan.
I started this whole thing on January 2 2021 now 11 months later I finally got to run my truck.
Every weekend that there was a race something cam up. But yesterday the track announced that they were open for practice.

So I dropped everything and tossed all my stuff in the truck and raced over to the track. It’s only ten minutes away.

There was no one there at all. I was kinda glad so I spent four hours and went through at least seven battery packs.

It was super fun to just practice jumps and trying to make perfect laps. My concentration was to be as smooth as possible and not crash. Slowly increasing speed.

I check last years winners and they can do 20-22 laps @ +~- 20 seconds per lap.

I could maybe get three or four laps before my mind wandered and I went off the track or bounced over a jump wrong.

From the video I was turning laps about 30 seconds or so. I don’t think it was bad for the first time on a track and really the first time driving the truck.

I definitely had a blast and hope to go again before the big freeze. But next year I’ll try again.

Congrats on getting out there, looks good!

I find that having some sort of goal helps with the focus. It doesn't always have to be lap time though. In fact I find that measuring practice by lap time to not always be productive. As a newbie myself, finding a smooth line usually pays the most dividends, like you mentioned. So a goal like carrying throttle through the sweeper or hitting the rhythm section cleanly always helps me. All by yourself? Music can help with focus on repetitive tasks. Just play it lowish so you can hear the car

Good luck on getting back out there soon.

It finally happened. After all this time I finally got to race. What a great day it was. Weather was terrible with wind so bad trucks would go off a ramp and fly backwards. Even the spot a pot blew over. The SCT 410.3 is amazing. I have zero experience at this. But plenty of racing experience. So I tried my best to ignore all the other drivers and not crash. Going slow at this point is the fastest way I can go. My average lap was below 30 seconds and got eleven laps in five minutes. With a fast lap of 25 seconds. I placed 3 out of six in the two qualifiers and then I was second place in the B main just missing the A main by 2 seconds. I’m very pleased with the SCT 410. Looking at the data is was just cruising along. Motor temps at 175 deg. The Mod 4 motor has plenty of power. It could really rocket down the straight. I had a little to much throttle curve. I hoped it would tame the power some. But it just made the throttle very soft at low speed then lots of power in the last 2/3 of throttle travel. I made it much more linear now. Next week is race two. I’m super excited to get back on the track

After the results are in I am very pleased with my performance. I got 11 laps on each race. The top guys got 20. So they are about 20-23 seconds a lap and I am about 28 seconds per lap. And have a consistently swing of 5 seconds. My best lap was 25 seconds and there worst lap was 26 seconds. Difference is most of my laps are above 25 and all of there laps are below 25 seconds. I need five seconds.
I know I can go faster in the straight sections. And the jumps are fun but at my level I’m better to attempt a triple in practice and go for a clean double. Not crashing and most importantly do not race people that get next to me. Every time I try to do that I crash. So for race two I am going to visualize the track and mentally prepare. Memorizing the track and then practice Saturday. For Sundays race I plane to run my own race and focus on little squirts of speed in the straights.
Only change to the truck is the throttle. I had a very conservative throttle curve. That’s gone and it more linear now. Same gearing but one change at a time.

Going out this weekend for round 2. I have about three hours of total run time on the rig since I first built it. When should I change the fluid in the differential’s?

The second race is in the books. It was a fantastic day for the most part. I finished third in the first two qualifiers and then got first place in the B main. In the A main I finished last but I got a personal best of 22 second lap. Also one of the competitors came up to me and said my rear suspension was to soft and that was why I could not clear the triple. He adjusted my rear springs and now I can easily clear the triple. I did it once in the race because I was afraid. But after the race I did like three laps and I’m looking forward to next time. Just before the A main it started to rain and the track was very wet. It’s a clay mud mix and the truck is a mess. But getting to the A main was a thrill.

I pulled down the shocks and diffs for fluid changes. Keeping the gears in order. The fluid in the diff is very dark. The shocks fluid was fine but I replaced the stuff that came with the kit with FC fluids.

I have been running this rig now for half the season. The Techno SCT 410.3 is just a solid workhorse. I charge it up and toss it on the track. Blast around and with a little luck I can make the A main by winning the B main. But if I don’t it’s my own fault. The Pro 4 motor sends it down the straight as fast as anybody it can jum the triple when I can get it lined up and the wind it right. Now after a couple months of tuning it is a solid predictable fast race vehicle. Still running the original body. I’ll get a new one for next year.

Out today testing and practicing. The truck is just so solid I have a heat sink on the motor and now with the 15 tooth pinion the temp is staying perfectly normal even after 20 minutes of hard driving in 90 deg weather.

After racing this rig for a full season. I took it to a big banked asphalt oval and raced it there doing very well and having a blast.
I then tore the whole rig down and inspected everything. The right rear wheel bearing was a little rough. That’s it. The only part that needed to be replaced. So one body one set of tires one ceramic bearing I replaced with the bearing that came in the kit. That says a lot about the quality of the kit. The competition in modified 4wd short corse is tough and I finished seventh in the points. Looking forward to next year already.
