CRASH : ESC on/off switch / NB4+ failsafe 70% brake

Hi, I wanted to share an experience I had with my MT48 (not related to Tekno) because it might help someone avoid an accident.


We have snow here, and since I had just finished building the MT48, I still wanted to try it out on my property. I’m running a Mamba Monster X combo that I bought second-hand; it's about 7 years old but has never been used. I also have a brand-new NB4+ transmitter, and for the failsafe I had set 70% brake (this is important 😉).


I start driving in the snow, the car runs perfectly, super fun to drive, everything is fine. I take a break to talk with a neighbor while holding the transmitter, and after about 2 minutes the car suddenly takes off full speed in reverse… I pull full throttle and it stops. I think maybe I accidentally touched the trigger without noticing, but I start to be suspicious.


Ten minutes later it happens again while I’m setting up my ramp. This time I’m not even holding the transmitter and the car slams full speed into the fence. I remove the LiPo to try to understand what’s going on.


After some tests, I realize that the ESC’s ON/OFF switch is defective. It powers the receiver intermittently (and even when switched OFF, the car was still running). So the conclusion is that some ON/OFF switches are not reliable, especially with moisture, and can create more problems than safety. I’m going to remove it.

When the receiver isn’t properly powered, the signal becomes unstable and the transmitter goes into failsafe mode. Since I had set 70% brake in the transmitter failsafe, this can be interpreted as reverse depending on the ESC, so I changed the failsafe brake to 0%.

Fortunately, I had decided to do my first tests on my own property because it’s a safe area, and I only broke a body tower. But this kind of issue in a park with people around could have had much more serious consequences. A week earlier I had driven a whole pack with no issues at all, but humidity or cold changed everything.

That’s why I wanted to share this experience, to help someone else (especially if kids are around) avoid making the same mistake.

Thanks for sharing your experience and tip. Safety is alway at the top of my list. Hope it's an easy fix for the on/off button.
 
I’ll just cut the wires and connect them together, solder them, and add heat-shrink tubing. It will always stay ON. I’ll unplug the LiPo to turn it OFF. On the Traxxas Maxx V2 there’s a button to turn the ESC on, but to turn it off you also need to unplug the LiPo. I’m confident ;)
 
The on/off switch is the first thing that goes before I install an ESC. ESCs with a plug board I'll make a bypass loop and the ones that don't I'll cut off the switch and solder the wires together. This isn't possible with Hobbywings but the switches aren't a problem. I do this because I'm a basher and on hard landings and rolls the truck will shut itself off.
