Hi all, I just bought a Gen 1 MT410 kit and trying to determine the best motor/ESC setup. Most likely going to run 4S, possibly occasional 6S but not a requirement. I'm not going to do anything extreme or race it but prefer a bigger motor for durability and less heat.

A few questions came up during my search and was hoping to get some input from the experts here.

Are there any specific downsides to relocating the ESC? Either in terms of performance/durability or maintenance in the future. I've seen some 3D printed mounts out there (link) and was considering going this route to allow for larger motors.

If relocating the ESC isn't too much of a hinderance I was considering going with a Mamba Monster X 8S + 1520-1650KV. Would there be any preferred options over this?

If keeping the ESC in stock location is preferable, I was considering either a Monster X + 1515-2200KV or a XR8 Plus G2s + Xerun 4268 1900kv. I wasn't sure if a XR8 Plus G2s + Xerun 4274 2250kv would fit, but if it does, I think this may be the better option. Another option may be the Tekin RX8 GEN3 + Redline T8 GEN3, but these seem less common than the HW and CC.

In general, if you were going to pick the "ultimate" ESC/motor setup for Gen 1 MT410 today without considering price, what would you use?

Thanks in advance!

Do you live in an area that experiences extreme heat ?
What type of tires are you planning to use? Are they large and heavy?
You answered the battery question.

If you want to be very reliable and conservative, then keep your kv selection rather low (<2000kv).

I personally find most 6s ESCs to be “plenty” and don’t see much value in going 8s. As are the 4274 motors.
Bear in mind that 6s powers comes with a lot more breakage and wear on the driveline. Sticking to 4s is really the best thing you can do if you’re going for reliability over peak performance.

Now if you’re looking for big power, speed and fancy relocating the ESC, you should plan on going with the extended chassis as well. But that’s a bit of a different build altogether.

Personally, i like my Monster X build best out of all my rigs.

I would pass on the Tekin and HW XR8. Those are competition based and not water resistant. Even if you don't plan on getting it wet a puddle will find you eventually.

4S with a1900-2200KV motor is plenty of power for the little truck. 6S in my opinion would be a waste. You'll never get full trigger without backflipping onto your lid.

If you want to go HW go with the Max series. The Max 8 would be plenty.

With Castle the Mamba X works fine. I run the Mamba X and 1515 2200KV with I think a 17T pinion and it's plenty for the little truck. Others have complained about heat with this combo. I'm on the Texas gulf coast so there's no lack of ambient temperature here. I use a heat sink with dual 30mm fans on the motor and in the summer can see around 170 ish temps on the motor after running a couple back to back 6000 mah packs. I think this motor is about 4 years old now.

Oh, and the Castle Link and data logging is the bees knees.

Thanks a lot!

I'm in Northern California, and most likely wouldn't run in temperatures higher than the mid-80's.

Haven't settled on tires yet, but the MX3.8 Badlands or dBoots Backflip 3.8 are the top contenders (other suggestions are welcome).

I'm fine with it being purely a 4S truck, definitely value less breakage/issues over peak performance.

Sounds like the CC Mamba X + 1515 2200KV is probably the way to go.

I did consider ordering the Extended Chassis kit from M2C, but it seems like it may be a bit excessive for now. I'm planning to order the center brace and rear horizontal brace from M2C along with the steel spur, shock caps and servo horn from Tekno. Are there any other essential upgrades I should include when building?

Thanks again.

The Backflip LP are probably the most common go to for rubber. No complaints here.

I did the same rear brace with the others stock. Aluminum shock caps and emulsion set up. I couldn't get the bladders to seal.

The build will call for a #19 drill bit or 4mm reamer to ream the inner hinger pin holes on the arms. A 5/32" round chain saw file chucked in a drill works really good. I think they were 7 or 9 bucks for a pack of two when I got them. Good to have for maintenance in the future to keep the arms pivoting nice and free.

I had the Castle Mamba Monster X 1/8 and 2200kv motor in mine on 4s with the LP backflips and it was an absolute monster. Plenty of speed and did standing backflips on 4s when in high traction areas.

I went from a MMX ESC & 4276 2000kv motor to a relocated HW MAX6 ESC & 4492 1650kv combo after i melted my battery terminals off of the MMX, which then required a warranty return to Castle to have them fix the ESC that had only had about four to six better packs through it. I have huge heavy tires on mine, so that was a factor along with 100°+ heat. I always run the smallest pinion that fits, which i think is a 16 tooth for my application. Zero electrical issues after increasing motor and ESC sizes.

Thanks for all the suggestions and tips! That's a nice truck!

I'll go ahead and stick with the MMX + 1515 2200kV CC setup without relocation since it sounds like it will work well for my application (I may end up running 2S occasionally at our local carpet track and the lighter, higher kV motor will likely be good for that).

I think the final build looks like this:
Motor + ESC: Castle Creations Monster w/1515 (2200Kv)
Servo: RAW 800LP (Have is laying around from a crawler build)
BEC: Castle Creations BEC 2.0 14A (also extra from crawler build)
Wheels/Tires: Arrma Dboots 'Back-Flip Mt 6S'
Body: VW Baja Bug (Bought for my Slash and decided not to use)
Receiver: Flysky FGr4S
Battery: Gens Ace G-Tech 5300mAh 4S LiPo Battery 60C
Servo horn: Tekno 25T Aluminum Servo Horn
Shock caps: Tekno RC Aluminum Shock Caps (Emulsion/Vented/Non-Vented)
Braces: M2C 6905 TEKNO V2 ALUMINUM SOLID CENTER BRACE & M2C 6973 TEKNO MT 410 REAR HORIZONTAL BRACE
Pinion: Will get 15t, 16t, 17t and try them out
