Hey everyone,

So I just got back into the RC world and grabbed a Typhon and Maxx. Feel in love with the Typhon on the track so now I'm looking to pickup a Tekno Truggy kit. I'm actually kind of up in the air if I want a Tekno buggy or truggy. However, my issue is I'm completely lost on what motor/esc I need to get. I'm not looking to get super serious but it will see some track use but also some bashing.

So what's a good motor/esc to go with that won't be overkill/break the bank

Also, what servo should I look at?

For your situation I would start out with a sensorless combo, no need to get a fancy sensored setup unless you're serious about racing and need to be super competitive where throttle timing on jumps will be critical, as well as smoother braking control, etc which is what a sensored system will offer.

For most entry level racers, they won't be able to tell the difference with a sensorless system.

For buggy, I'd go with the 2050KV motor here: https://www.rcjuice.com/motor-esc/b...ole-brushless-sensorless-motor-1-8-buggy.html

For Truggy, I'd go with the 2000KV motor here: https://www.rcjuice.com/motor-esc/b...ensorless-motor-1-8-truggy-monster-truck.html

Servos can be tricky because there are a wide range of options out there, the following servo is very durable, arguably the best servo I've owned in this price range:
https://www.banggood.com/JX-Servo-P...Digital-Servo-p-1074875.html?cur_warehouse=CN

Keep in mind that you get what you pay for, over time the gears will start to get sloppy and you'll eventually strip the gears, replacement gear sets can be found here:
https://www.amainhobbies.com/ecopower-120t-metal-servo-gear-set-ecp-3099/p-qtaxt2tqhb2xactz

more info on compatibility between ecoPower and JX:

I found that gears needed to be replaced about once a year for club racing 1 day a week and moderate crashing on a 1/8 track.

If you want a more durable servo with gears that will last 2+ years before any slop/stripping, then I would recommend SRT:
https://dialedhobbies.com/srt-bh9032-1-8-hv-high-torque-aluminum-case-brushless-servo-detail

SRT is a little smoother and more powerful, but a beginner driver probably won't be able to tell much difference with the JX servo I referenced first.

Good Luck!

Thanks so much for the long and detailed list. I appreciate your time as this really helps me narrow things down. With the Max 8 Esc will I be limited in anyway if I choose to go with a "better" motor down the road?

Yes the Max8 is limited to sensorless motors, if you wanted to have more flexibility then I would consider the XR8 Plus:
https://www.hobbywingdirect.com/products/xerun-xr8-esc?variant=3318273348

You could feasibly run the XR8 SCT:
https://www.hobbywingdirect.com/products/xerun-xr8-sct-pro-esc?variant=25945588616

only drawback with the XR8 SCT is that it won't last as long as the XR8 Plus, I tend to get about 1 year of use before gremlins start to hit me with the XR8 SCT and the XR8 Plus will often go 2-3 years before it needs to be replaced making it more cost effective in the long run based on my personal experience with both ESC's :)

I don't recommend the XR8 Pro which was recently released... that ESC is only compatible with HobbyWing branded motors... they might release a firmware update to make it compatible with other brands of motors but that may be unlikely because of so many advanced features that it offers. Another issue withe XR8 Pro is that I'm seeing an unacceptable failure rate over a short period of use at the track in my area... roughly 20+ drivers are running the ESC (including myself) and 5+ drivers have already had the XR8 Pro fail on them in less than 2 months of racing :(

I would hold out to see if HobbyWing makes an announcement with an upgraded Pro version before I would start recommending it.

Never tested the HobbyStar ESC's, they might be good, but I learned many years ago to only trust HobbyWing ESC's where they offer deep discounts on replacement ESC's when one fails making it more cost effective to stay with HobbyWing over the long haul.

Thanks for the feedback. Can you explain a bit on how hobbywing provides the discounts on replacements? I am not familiar with hobbywing...been out of the hobby too too long.

Very rarely does a HobbyWing product fail under warranty, most often the ESC will fail several years down the road, and often the ESC that has failed will have been discontinued, ha!

Basically you open an RMA and explain the issue, they will quote you an "upgrade price", you mail them the bad ESC and send them tracking info, then they send you in invoice for payment and you get a brand new ESC for a deep discount where the discount varies based on what ESC you are sending in and price of the ESC you want to upgrade to. Of the one's I've sent in, I typically get around 25% to 40% off where the more expensive the ESC, the larger the discount.

I was looking at the Hobbystar motor and notice they are ESC too. How are those?
I wouldn’t get a hobbystar esc I got the 220A and it doesn’t work properly out of the box and RCJuice won’t respond to my emails on how to go about getting it warranties. I do and still will buy motors from him in my ET48 um using a max8 esc with 2000 kv 4076 motor in my EB48 um using xr8 plus and surpass hobby rocket 4274 sensored 2250 kv love both combos. I’ll be replacing the max8 with a xr8 plus and sh rocket 4274 1700 kv in the ET48.

thanks for the feedback guys. That's very good to know about Hobbywing's warrenty and discounts.

What motor fan/heatsink is that? I notice on the ET48 2.0, the motor is very close to the center brace.
