As some of you already know I have stuffed a Leopard 4092 1480kv motor into my et48.3
I am running 6s through a MMX (Mamba Monster X) and a 20T pinion. I have dual WTF fans and heat sink over the motor, and yet I hit temps of 200 degrees this morning. Previously I was running a Castle 1515 on 4s, but since I wanted to run 6s I figured the lower kv would keep my temps under control. Anyone have any experience with this motor, do they get hot easier than something like a TP Power motor of the same size?

Tires are Badlands MX38's and I was running is mostly grass, not tall but it was wet. The wet grass made for a long cleaning session to say the least.

Thinking of ordering some Boca ceramic Orange Seal bearings for the motor, but even if iut drops my temps 10 degrees, 190 is still way to hot.

I run 17t pinion in my kraton with the leppy 1480kv and larger 3.8 mt tires, been a long time since I temp checked it so can't remember what the Temps were... but I wouldn't still be running it if I was worried, I would say drop down too a 17t pinion too run 6s or switch too truggy tires too run 20t pinion

I have a Leopard 4282 2000KV that always ran hot since day 1 no matter what I tried. Tried gearing, timing changes, and tire changes and could never get it to run as cool as my other brands of motors in the same rig. Stupid motor just always ran around 180F and still does to this day. Still going 6 years later tho, so that's a plus. Lol. Had a similar experience with Tenshock as well.

You can't expect the best from those cheap Chinese motors, you usually get what you pay for. On paper the cheap stuff is a great value but more times than not they wont perform as well as a quality brand. The only Chinese brand motor I'd buy is hobbywing.
Ain't trying to say brands like leopard are a bad buy, they are awesome values as long as they work well for you. A friend of mine put a 1/8 leopard motor in a slash 4x4 and it was fantastic because they weigh so little and push small tires and only 3s, so no heat issue.

I actually had this motor in a Arrma Nero before moving to the et48, I ran a 15T pinion in that and never once bothered to check the temps. How does it run in your Kraton, thought about putting in my Kraton when I had it.

6 years of 180 temps and it still running solid, nice!

The Leopard came with my Arrma Nero when I bought it from a friend. It pushed that heavy Nero like nothing wityh the Nero tires. These mx38's are slightly taller, but the Nero tires are just as wide and that RC is a tank! I hear you on cheaper electronics, I been eyeing the TP Power 4070 but can not find the specs on its length. it is 107mm long, so maybe I need to look at the 4060, this is the same length as my Leopard. Both the TP Power motors are a "build your own" and are fairly cheap @ $119 or $130, I have heard good things about TP Power.

I tried the leopard 4092 1300kv motor in my ET on 6S, trencher 40 tires and 16T pinion. The motor was struggling to lift the truck and temps were very hot. I then put a 20T and it was worse, zero power off the start and heat up after a few pass in my street. I didn't even bother trying to run a full pack on it. So back on the 16T and after half a parck of 6S 5000mah the motor was burning hot at 80°C. I won't bother again with leopard motor, they are crap ! I just bought a genuine castle 1717 1650kv and hopefully it will be powerful and run cool if i manage to fit a 20T pinion.

Really, it didnt have no power at all? I've got crazy power with this thing, plenty of torque to boot. Standing backflips are a sinch, even at half throttle I can goose it and get it to do a backflip. I'm gonna run my backflip tires and check temps today. They are nearly the same hieght, but not as wide.

In fact when the truck was stopped and i pressed the trigger there was a sort of delay and it was really sluggish. i was not impressed at all. Next to that the small 4274 2200kv from hobbywing had instant response and was super smooth but run very hot too due to high kv

wow, mine is nothing like that at all. Maybe you got a lemon or something?

I think I've figured out what contributed to some of the higher temps. Last week I added metal screening over my motor fans, to keep out small rocks or pieces of twigs. I'm thinking this may have reduced my airflow therefore reduced the cooling from my fans.

Here is the screening, I also have this over my ESC fan and it seems to be OK with temps on there.

You'll need to grind away either the motor can or the center brace a bit to fit a 20T, i have a 21T and it barely fits, the mesh may be a bit loose.

I had to grind away part of the heat sink to get the whole thing to drop in. I say drop in but it didnt "drop in" I had to place the motor, then slide the fan bottom bracket under the motor and install that way.

I took my Boca Ceramic bearing out of my Castle 1515 and put them in the Leopard, motor spins more freely now, feels much smoother. The bearings I pulled from the Leopard felt as if they had no grease at all in them. I also removed that screening from the fans, air is now flowing better. Only thing is, we have a tropical system over us creating rain rain and more rain :(

I think I got lucky and got a magic leopard motor! I’ve got a Leopard 4092 1730kv in a fairly heavy D8t based truck. 18t pinion. Backflips tires. I run almost exclusively 6s in this truck and it runs cool as a cucumber...never hit more than 160 tops even bashing hard in the heat. I have two long can tp power motors 1650kv, and a 4092 1730kv hobbystar. .....none of them run as cool as my Leopard. I think they are hit and miss...just depends how hard they’re whipping the little Chinese kids that build them on any given day.

haha, I guess you did get lucky as you have a higher kv than I do. With my Backflips I was hitting around 170 degrees, these mx38's are a tad wider, but it was so long between running that I had forgotten I installed the metal screen over the fans. I still don't know if this is for sure what increased my temps so much, or if it solely on the wider tires. The rain here is ruining my drive time LOL. I ran once before after a rain and was pulling wet grass out of my rig for 2 hours. I dont want to go through that again any time soon.

at the end of the day I feel I will be dropping a tooth or 2 in pinion size. speed chat says I'll still be 60 mph with a 17T. says I am 69 mph with the 20T, cant say for sure if that spreadsheet is 100% correct, but this thing moves quick!

:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:Something tells me this is wrong but I laughed my ass off at it. I am turning into a mutant and growing am extra hand just to give you 3 thumbs up for this one. (y)(y)(y)

Yes i already grinded the brace but i'll grind a bit more and hopefully it'll fit. Since you own this motor, what heatsink have you on it ?

You two mean to use a smaller pinion right? With a 20T I have plenty of room to drop down a gear, all the way to 15T. Heat sink I did have to cut some off due to the brace though. It is a YeahRacing heat sink with WTF fans on it.

Was talking to rc user because he has a castle 1717 (50x85mm) motor and i'll reveive the same motor soon. This motor is so huge that the smallest pinion you can use is 21T
